"An experiment in the creative communication of visible events without the aid of inter-titles, a scenario or theatre "aiming at creating a truly international absolute language of cinema," is how the inter-titles describe what is about to be seen. Bold claims indeed, but in its awesome sophistication The Man with a Movie Camera does live up to them, making it one of the most contemporary of silent movies. The subject, the life of a city from dawn to dusk, was not original even for 1928, but its treatment was--the cameraman as voyeur, social commentator and prankster, exploiting every trick permissible with the technology of the day (slow motion, dissolves, split screens, freeze frames, stop motion animation, etc). A young woman stirs in her bed, apparently fighting a nightmare in which a cameraman is about to be crushed by an oncoming train. She wakes up, and the sequence is revealed to be a simple trick shot. As she blinks her weary eyes, the shutters of her window mimic her viewpoint, and the iris of the camera spins open. Self-reflexive wit like this abounds here--there's even a delicious counterpoint made between the splicing of film and the painting of a woman's nails. The film was the brainchild of the Moscow-based film-maker Dziga Vertov (real name Denis Arkadyevich Kaufman), a furiously inventive poet of the cinema who made innumerable shorts about daily life (such as the much-quoted "Kino-Pravda"), and played at candid camerawork and cinema vérité long before they became the clichés of the television age. The editing has a fantastic abandon that makes most pop videos look sluggish. --David Thompson
The BFI Archive's acclaimed restoration of Anthony Asquith's subterranean tale of love, jealousy and murder is finally made available in this stunning Dual Format Edition. This classic British film from the silent era features Neil Brand's new orchestral score, recorded live in 2012, which perfectly complements the film's richly detailed evocation of 1920s London. From his own screenplay Anthony Asquith balances the light and dark sides of London life, aided by a superb cast of Brian Aherne and Elissa Landi as the nice young lovers and Norah Baring and Cyril McLaglen as their unhappy counterparts. More than any other film from Britain's silent canon, Underground evokes the life of the ordinary Londoner with its scenes of the bustling underground and the capital's parks, double-decker buses, pubs and shabby bedsits. Special Features: New score by celebrated silent film composer Neil Brand Alternative audio track by the UK's leading sound recordist Chris Watson A selection of early transport films from the Archive

No one loves the cold months better than acerbic fat cat Garfield, who thrives on a bounty of junk food and traditional meals in the delightful collection of musical-comedy TV specials Garfield Holiday Celebrations. "Garfield's Halloween Adventure" finds the portly hero and airhead-sidekick Odie the dog scrounging through owner Jon's attic to find perfect costumes, then encountering ghosts and ghoulies that seem a tad authentic. "Garfield's Thanksgiving" is a screwball special in which Jon harasses veterinarian Liz into being his Turkey Day guest. Trouble is, Jon is clueless about how to cook a big bird; fortunately, starving Garfield has the good sense to call in Jon's spirited grandmother for a culinary rescue. Grandma shows up, too, in "A Garfield Christmas," about a family get-together that covers all the nice holiday stuff and, of course, lots of bickering, pouting, and jealousy. As long as Garfield gets his Yuletide lasagna, however, all is right with the world. --Tom Keogh
Reunions by middle-aged rock groups are usually as desirable as unannounced visits by ex-lovers whose former appeal, is now lost. However, as Live at the Apollo demonstrates, the 21st century return of Roxy Music was a much more pleasant surprise, for two reasons. First, Roxy Music did not commit the grotesque self-indulgence, common on occasions such as this, of subjecting their audiences to any new material: the set captured here, at London's Apollo Theatre in October 2001, is hit after hit, delivered with a palpable enthusiasm. Second, and most importantly, even 30 years after their foundation, and 25 years past their creative peak, Roxy Music's songs still sound like they're being phoned back from the future. On the DVD: Live at the Apollo is presented in 16:9 picture ratio with three sound options: Dolby Digital 5.0 Surround, Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo, and DTS 5.0 Surround. Subtitles are available in English. There is also a 15-minute documentary containing interviews and some rehearsal footage. --Andrew Mueller
